Resources For Formation

LAST UPDATE MAY 13, 2004

Bishop Morneau points out that there are five major influences that shape our Vision (view of the world – philosophy) that lead to Values (attitudes-dispositions), that are expressed in Virtue (life-style).

They are:  Family (Parents, siblings, relatives)

            Peers (people we friend with)

            Education (teachers)

            Religion (our morals and ideals)

Culture (what do we listen to, what do we watch, what do we read, etc)

BERNARDIN, JOSEPH CARDINAL      THE GIFT OF PEACE In the final two months of his life, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin mad it his mission to share his personal reflections and insights in this book. Using as a framework the previous three years, which included false accusation of sexual misconduct, diagnosis of cancer, and return of the cancer after fifteen months of being in remission, Cardinal Bernardin tells his story openly and honestly.

BRUSKEWITZ, BP FABIAN         A SHEPHERD SPEAKS The highly regarded, outspoken Bishop of Lincoln, Nebraska presents a series of profound reflections on the meaning of the Catholic faith in today's world and how to live it. He has created a balanced view of the Christian life and invites the faithful to join in.

DEMELLO, ANTHONY              WALKING ON WATER This book continues de Mello's tradition of opening our eyes to what has been before us. He offers us a new way to explore our religious beliefs and to live with one another. His emphasis on truly experiencing the reality of God and other people rather than confining them to our limited preconceptions and biases is a completely refreshing way to think about one's spiritual life

DEMELLO, ANTHONY              AWAKENING: CONVERSATION WITH THE MASTERS With more than two million books sold and countless admirers throughout the world, Anthony de Mello is regarded as one of the most influential religious teachers of the past fifty years. Since his death in 1987, widespread recognition of his work's enduring value has continued to grow. In Awakening, de Mello explores "the wisdom that cannot be conveyed in human speech." Through 365 meditations, blending the mystical traditions of both East and West, he creates the lessons of a profound "master" to his "pupil," illustrating our common need for harmony and enlightenment. The daily parables, sometimes cryptic and often witty, are not meant so much to instruct as to awaken the understanding deep within the human heart.

DEMELLO, ANTHONY              CONTACT WITH GOD Nowhere is Anthony de Mello's characteristic warmth and insight more evident than in the series of talks he gave while guiding retreats. Known throughout the world as one of the foremost religious guides, de Mello offers here the transcripts from his beloved lectures, inspiring readers going on retreat and including suggestions for how to get the most out of the retreat experience. In Contact with God (reissued and available for the first time from Image), he intersperses his descriptions of various types of prayer with stories from his own life, as well as the thought-provoking parables for which he is best known.

FELDMAN, CHRISTIAN             MOTHER TERESA: LOVE STAYS A unique and complete biography, composed of eyewitness reports, photographs, and her own lasting words. The life of Mother Teresa spanned the 20th century and, in ways no one could have foreseen, transformed it. This brief biography offers highlights from her humble yet splendid life, and shows why the love she embodied will last forever.
Haunted by the squalor of Calcutta slums, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1948. Her love for the needy soon expanded to embrace the poorest places on earth. Fifty years later she left behind a worldwide network of more than 4,600 sisters (and even more volunteers) in schools, shelters, clinics, hospitals, leprosaria, and hospices. Winner of the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa was unimpressed by her universal celebrity. As this book shows, in word and picture, her eye was always on the greatest prize of all, "the pearl of great price."

HAHN, SCOTT                 LORD, HAVE MERCY In “Lord, Have Mercy”, Scott Hahn explores the sacrament of reconciliation and shows why it is the key to spiritual growth, particularly in these times of intense anxiety and uncertainty.

HAHN, SCOTT                 THE LAMB’S SUPPER “The Lamb’s Supper”: reveals a long-lost secret of the Church: The early Christians’ key to understanding the mysteries of the Mass was the New Testament’s Book of Revelation. With its mystic visions of Heaven, and its end-of-time prophecies, Revelation mirrors the sacrifice and celebration of the Eucharist. Beautifully written in clear, direct language, this book will help readers see the Mass with new eyes, pray the liturgy with a renewed heart, and enter into the Mass more fully, enthusiastically, intelligently, and powerfully than ever before.

HAHN, SCOTT                 FIRST COMES LOVE Delving into the Gospels, Hahn shows that family terminology--words like brother, sister, mother, father, and home--dominates Jesus' speech and the writings of His first followers, and that these very words illuminate Christianity's central ideas. As he explores the fatherhood of God, the marriage of the Church to Christ, and the all-enveloping role of the Holy Spirit, Hahn deepens readers' understanding of the sacraments, teaches them how to create a family life in the image of the Trinity, and demonstrates the ways in which the analogy of the family applies to every aspect of Catholicism and its practices--from the role of "father" embodied by the ancient patriarchs and contemporary parish priests, to the comfort and guidance offered by the brothers and sisters who comprise the Communion of Saints, to the nurturing embrace of Mary, the mother of all Christians.

HAHN, SCOTT                 HAIL, HOLY QUEEN In Hail, Holy Queen, Hahn asks us to view Mary in a new light, presenting what he believes to be her essential role in Christianity's redemptive message. By turns subtle and poetic, he writes about the Marian mystery at the heart of Revelation. A serious, thoroughly accessible study.

HAHN, SCOTT                 ROME SWEET HOME A story about a couple's search for the truth and how they dealt with the consequences of finding it. There is so much to be learned from this couple. No matter what denomination of Christianity you belong to, this is a book that grabs you. I could not let it down until I was finished.

HAYS, FR EDWARD M.      PRAY ALL WAYS Father Hays challenges us to explore the common and ordinary in our lives as the stuff from which are made whole and holy people.

HAYS, FR. EDWARD M.     THE ETHIOPIAN TATTOO SHOP Parables are stories with numerous meanings. Once again the storyteller-author of Twelve and One Half Keys unlocks a treasury of twenty-two or forty-four original parable-stories as traveling companions for those on the spiritual quest.

HURNARD, HANNAH         HIND’S FEET ON HIGH PLACES Who does not wish that they could overcome evil, tribulation, sorrow, and pain, and transform them all for the praise and glory of God? Who does not want to live here on earth on the high places of love and victory as promised by God?  This cannot be done by reliance on ourselves alone. We must lay down our own selfish will and accept the liberation of living according to God's will.  Hinds' Feet on High Places shows us how we can triumph over evil and pain, grief and suffering by placing ourselves in the hands of God, who wants to bring all his children to him.

KARON, JAN                   AT HOME IN MITFORD The first in a series of novels, this heartwarming book introduces readers to a small, charming North Carolina town and its equally charming denizens. Filled with the mysteries and miracles of everyday life and rich, provincial humor, At Home in Mitford will have readers clamoring for more. Followed by a sequel, A Light in the Window.

KUSHNER, HAROLD S.      HOW GOOD DO WE HAVE TO BE? In this inspiring bestseller, the author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People puts human shortcomings in perspective and teaches us how we can learn to accept ourselves and others even when we and they are less than perfect. Drawing on the Bible, modern literature, psychology, theology, and his own thirty years as a congregational rabbi, Kushner shows how acceptance and forgiveness can change our relationships with the most important people in our lives and help us meet the challenges of being human.

KUSHNER, HAROLD S.      WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE Wise and compassionate advice on how to cope with tragedy, what to do about anger and how to keep from feeling guilty.

MORNEAU, BP ROBERT           ASHES TO EASTER Join Bishop Morneau on a richly rewarding meditative journey through the forty days of Lent. Each day begins with the identification of the day of Lent and the Gospel reading. A brief commentary on that day's reading is followed by a meditative refrain taken from the Divine Office that summarizes a Gospel theme. Unique to this volume is a poem for each of the days, followed by three questions that are used for personal reflection. The entry concludes with a morning prayer from the Divine Office. From the solemn beginning of Ash Wednesday to the joyous celebration of the Resurrection, Ashes to Easter is a spiritual adventure. (No longer in print)

MORNEAU,      BP ROBERT     FROM RESURRECTION TO PENTECOST: EASTER-SEASON REFLECTIONS  This third edition of Bishop Morneau’s successful seasonal meditation series takes reader through the 40 days of the Easter season. Keyed to the gospels, each meditation includes a brief Gospel reflection, a poem or inspirational passage from a beloved Christian poet such as Gerard Manley Hopkins, Jessica powers, and R.S. Thomas, and a prayer form the church’s liturgy. A poet himself, Bishop Morneau’s meditations make for deep spiritual reading, yet are simple enough to inspire during a brief quiet time in a busy day.

MORNEAU, BP ROBERT          FATHOMING BETHLEHEM: ADVENT MEDITATIONS

MORNEAU  BP ROBERT           POETRY AS PRAYER: JESSICA POWERS

NOUWEN, HENRI J.M.              THE RETURN OF THE PRODIGAL SON The beloved spiritual writer meditates on the parable of the prodigal son's return — a powerful drama of fatherhood, filial duty, rivalry, and anger between brothers — and its enduring lessons for Christianity.

PREJEAN, HELEN                    DEAD MAN WALKING In 1982, a Roman Catholic nun became the spiritual advisor to a condemned murderer who was soon executed. Powerfully and persuasively, with a compassion that embraces not only the terrified killer but also the families of his victims and the men who executed him, Prejean narrates Patrick Sonnier’s walk to the electric chair.

ROHR, RICHARD                     JOB AND THE MYSTERY OF SUFFERING  The ancient story of Job that grapples with the question of why there is suffering in the world even for those who lead a good and upright life has challenged, perplexed, and comforted readers for millennia. Here Richard Rohr shares his understanding of the book, both in its historical setting and as a most important message for today. The book speaks most strongly to those whose own world has fallen apart, but in its essence, it is a call to each reader to let go of old certitudes and goals and to place faith and trust radically in God alone. This book is a spiritual commentary and chapter-by-chapter Scripture study of the many themes that occur throughout the book. In this exploration many questions are raised as much about the reader's own life as Job's, and from this process is promised deeper understanding. In the course of the story, Job witnesses to the reality of pain, but also to gaining a new sense of joy and freedom and restoration of soul.

ROLHEISER, FR. RONALD         THE HOLY LONGING This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives. Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables—the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life—and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience. At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

SALMANI, FR FRANK        WHOM SHALL I SEND This book is written specifically addressed to the Cursillo Movement and was a guideline to the School of Leaders in Providence as the engaged in a year of discernment. The book looks into all phases of the Cursillo Movement with questions for Reflection/Discussion following each chapter. The School of Leaders in the Green Bay Diocese has been using this book.

One last thing...

Retreats in the spirit of silence have been a long and cherished tradition of Holy Name Retreat House. A retreat is an opportunity to give oneself an often-neglected disposition, an openness to listen to God. The quiet of silence is a much-needed ingredient for this disposition. As we present and urge this silence, it is not as a discipline, but rather as a gift for you, and others on retreat with you, to be able to listen closely to God. We continue to present and value this tradition at Holy Name Retreat House. Thank you for helping us both in the past and today. Enjoy the presence of God.
