The lay responsibilities fall into the following categories: Lay Director, Secretary, Treasurer, School of Leaders, Pre-Cursillo, Cursillo, and Post-Cursillo. Further information as to purpose, function, and latest information concerning each of these service areas will be explained by each of the individual chairmen/women on their particular informational page on this website.

Ths mission statement of record approved by Bishop David E Foley D.D. reads as follows:

The goal of the Diocese of Birmingham, AL Secretariat is to provide the Diocese with Leaders carefully selected and prepared from the best and the most qualified in union with the Catholic Church. The goal is to facilitate the transition of such leaders from
Pre-Cursillo to the 4th Day by careful attention to the authenticity of the Cursillo Method.
Pre-Cursillo seeks to support and refine the preparation of sponsors and candidates for the 3-day experience and life in the 4th Day.
Cursillo seeeks to insure that the 3-Day weekend is an authentic Cursillo that is focused on introducing the Ideal of a Life as an Authentic Catholic Christian, and the powerful means of perseverance found in Cursillo Group Reunion and Ultreya.
Post-Cursillo shall have the responsibility for continuing formation of Ultreyas for the Diocesan Movement. It works with Pre-Cursillo to form sponsor understanding of the 4th Day obligation to candidates.
School of Leaders shall seek to establish a community of leaders for service to the Diocesan Movement. In serving the Cursillo community it will perform certain necessary tasks but it must not become task-centered. These people must be willing to make sacrifices for the work that has to be done in all three phases of the Movement.

It must be remembered that unity of purpose is essential if there is to be courageous and total service to Jesus Christ through the Cursillo Movement. The Secretariat unifies the Movement on all levels and indicates the path to be followed in essential matters of practical details as indicated in the official literature. The Secretariat is a service unit dedicated to the total Movement. Christ has entrusted the Movement's direction to the Secretariat through the Bishop to whom the Secretariat is held accountable.

It is the responsibility of the Cursillista to be familiar with each of the service units of the Secretariat, so that the Cursillista may direct suggestions, questions, concerns and talents to the unit that might serve the Cursillista most effectively.
