History of the Filipino Cursillo Movement In The Bay Area |
| The Cursillo Movement,
which begun at Mallorca, Spain, has spread to many corners of the world.
Two American pilots from Stockton, California introduced the Cursillo
Movement in Cebu, Philippines, in 1963 under the spiritual direction of
Fr. Bruno Hicks. A small group of Cursillo immigrants started to sow the
seed in the Bay Area. In June 1969, under the leadership of Bro. Mike
Payongayong and Bro. Nestor Uy, (both deceased) the Filipino Cursillo
Community was organized. The first Ultreya was held at St. Patrick's Church
in San Francisco with Msgr. Fred Bitanga as Spiritual Director. 1970 The first Grand Ultreya was held at St. Vincent's School for Boys in San Rafael. 1971 The first Filipino Cursillo weekend was held at St. Benedict's Center in San Francisco. Since then, Cursillo weekends for both men and women have been held annually. 1972 Filipino Cursillistas in Oakland, California affiliated with the Filipino Cursillo in San Francisco started their own Ultreya. They held the first Cursillo weekend at St. Mary's Church with the assistance of the San Francisco Team. 1973 Bro. Whitney Geiger initiated the formation of the Filipino Cursillo Secretariat in San Francisco. The Secretariat became affiliated with the Diocesan Cursillo Secretariat of San Francisco with Fr. William E. Cane as the Spiritual Director. 1974 Fr. Jack McMullen became the Spiritual Advisor of the Filipino Sub-Secretariat. Fr. Jack devoted himself with the Filipino Secretariat in serving the 3-Day weekends and Post Cursillo activities. The first San Francisco newsletter "Cursillo Update" was published. 1978 Team members of the Bay Area Cursillo went to San Diego and introduced the Cursillo. Bro. Domingo Cabrera (now a deacon) was selected as Rector. 1981 Fr. Mikey McCormick replaced Fr. Jack McMullen as Spiritual Advisor of the Diocesan Cursillo Secretariat. In May 1981, Archbishop John Quinn, by the recommendation of Fr. Mikey McCormick appointed Deacon Bart Pullon and Deacon Mar Tano as Spiritual Advisors for the Filipino Cursillo Secretariat. 1983 Filipino Cursillistas in San Jose, California affiliated with the Filipino Cursillo in San Francisco started the Cursillo movement in San Jose. They held the first Cursillo weekend at St. Joseph's seminary with the assistance of the San Francisco Team. 1984 San Francisco Filipino Cursillo Secretariat was officially affiliated with the National Secretariat. 1985 The Filipino Cursillo Secretariat was recorded in the P.G. Kennedy Official Catholic Directory. 1986 Registered as a non-profit organization in the State of California. In June 1986, the constitution and by-laws of the San Francisco Filipino Cursillo Secretariat was drafted. 1991 The Constitution and by-laws of the Filipino Cursillo Secretariat was approved by the Secretariat. 1993 The official banner of the Filipino Cursillo Secretariat was blessed at the Grand Ultreya. 1970 to Present San Francisco Filipino Cursillo has spawned 2 priests and 8 permanent deacons. |
